When understanding the pattern doesn’t change it
Have you ever had something about yourself that you completely understand—and yet, for the life of you, you cannot seem to change it?
You know where it comes from. You know what triggers it. You might have talked about it, worked on it, journaled about it, and become incredibly self-aware around it.
And still, when the right button gets pushed, there you are again.
Maybe it’s the anxiety that wakes you up at 3 a.m. and won’t let you go back to sleep.
Maybe it’s how irritated you get around your mother-in-law, even though you promise yourself beforehand that this time you won’t let her get to you.
Maybe it’s the man you know isn’t right for you, but somehow you still can’t stop thinking about him.
Maybe it’s the knot in your stomach every time you have to speak up, disappoint someone, or say no.
Maybe it’s how one small comment from your partner can ruin your entire evening, even when part of you knows it really wasn’t that big of a deal.
Maybe you keep procrastinating on the one thing you genuinely want to do—and you cannot understand why you keep getting in your own way.
Or maybe you’re successful and capable in so many areas of your life, but there is this one thing where all your insight and self-awareness seem to make absolutely no difference.
You know what you want to feel or do differently.
You might even know exactly why you react the way you do.
And yet, when the moment comes, something else takes over.
This is something I find endlessly fascinating about us human beings.
Because understanding a pattern and changing a pattern are not always the same thing.
Our conscious mind can understand something beautifully, while deeper parts of us are still responding to patterns that were formed a very long time ago.
This is where the work I do with Metaphysical Anatomy Technique (MAT) can be so helpful. As a Certified Metaphysical Psychology Coach, I use MAT to gently work with the emotional and unconscious patterns held in the body.
What I particularly love about this work is that you don’t need to spend the session retelling your story, analyzing everything that happened, or reliving painful experiences.
We identify what you would like to shift and let the body lead us to what is underneath it.
Sometimes what we are carrying began with our own experiences. And sometimes the pattern goes much further back, carried through our families for generations.
And sometimes the thing that has made absolutely no sense to our conscious mind begins to make a great deal of sense once we discover what is happening underneath it.
This is why you can know exactly why you respond the way you do—and still find that your body seems to have another agenda.
